Goal:
This activity provides an overview of opportunities to serve the unique needs of pediatric and geriatric patients through the compounding of nonsterile dosage forms. Details on how developmental stages and aging affect how the body reacts to drugs, appropriate dosage forms based on these age-related changes, and formulation considerations for specific dosage forms will be discussed.
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this program, participants should be better able to:
• RECOGNIZE how age affects the way the body interacts with drug products
• DESCRIBE the advantages and disadvantages of different routes of administration and dosage forms in the pediatric population
• IDENTIFY the specific challenges in formulating appropriate dosage forms for the geriatric patient
• LIST specific formulation considerations when utilizing specialized dosage forms in the geriatric and pediatric patients
