Description:
A patient’s active participation is a key factor in establishing a strong physician-patient relationship. This module discusses scenarios that will help cardiothoracic surgeons overcome misperceptions about shared decision-making and understand the importance of involving patients when making decisions about treatment options.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
• Explain the different types of decision-making.
• Establish which type of decision-making the patient prefers and recall that the physician should engage in whichever method the patient chooses.
• Describe the advantages of shared decision-making.
• List different tools and techniques that the physician can use to aid the patient in shared decision-making.
