Statement of Need:
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for adults in the US. However, patients from minority populations with cardiovascular disease have disproportionately poor health outcomes and are particularly vulnerable to health disparities. Racial inequities in health also result in a higher risk burden in minority groups for metabolic syndromes such as Type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes, which increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Health disparities in cardiometabolic care predominantly affect African American/Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American, low socioeconomic status (SES) populations, and other minority groups. It is imperative that clinicians recognize the impact of health inequities and inequalities on outcomes in minority patients with cardiometabolic disorders and address unconscious bias and disparities in care.
This CME Outfitters Live and OnDemand will focus on identifying structural and social determinants of health (SDOH) and clinician biases that place minority patients at risk for poorer outcomes in cardiovascular disease and implementing health care practices to improve these outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this CME/CE activity, participants should be able to:
• Identify structural and social determinants of health (SDOH) that place African American/Black, Hispanic, and other minority populations at risk for poor outcomes in cardiovascular disease.
• Recognize the impact of bias and health inequity on the outcomes of patients with cardiometabolic disorders.
• Implement healthcare practices targeted at improving outcomes for minority patients with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.
