Geographic atrophy (GA) is an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and is characterized by loss of photoreceptors, retinal pigment epithelium, and choriocapillaris. It leads to progressive and irreversible decline of visual function, and the negative impact on the daily lives of patients with this disorder is substantial. Regardless of whether patients have nonneovascular (dry) or neovascular (wet) AMD, most will eventually be diagnosed with GA. New advances in technology hold promise in identifying and facilitating the monitoring of lesion growth. The investigation and recent approval of agents that target the complement cascade have provided clinicians with treatment options that can control GA progression. Thus, it is important for treating physicians to know how best to employ these therapies in daily practice. In this monograph, expert faculty review the role of the complement pathway in the pathogenesis of GA and best practices regarding the use of novel technologies to detect, monitor, and predict geographic lesion growth. They will also assess the recently approved and emerging therapies for GA and the clinical data supporting their use in this setting.
