Practicing and resident physicians and nurses in anesthesiology. Other interested healthcare practitioners are also welcome to participate.
Description:
Handoff communications in anesthesia care are prone to errors because these providers frequently transfer patient care. The daily process of information exchange increases the chances of adverse events due to errors in communication. There are currently no standardized checklists or mnemonics that are widely used for anesthesia handoffs. Therefore the handoffs in anesthesiology are very variable and can easily lead to errors, complications and even deaths. This activity will define the parameters important for safe anesthesia handoffs and provide a variety of checklists and mnemonics that can be implemented for effective handoff communications.
Learning Outcomes/Objectives
Upon completion, participants should be able to:
• Define anesthesia handoff communications and their role in healthcare practice today.
• Evaluate the parameters, mnemonics and checklists available for effective anesthesia handoff communications.
• Implement a framework for establishing better handoff communications in your organization.
