There are different types of racism, each with its own set of consequences. Structural racism, in particular, is the root cause of the unequal distribution of resources, services, and healthcare. This course discusses both the impacts of structural racism on patients’ medication adherence, as well as its potential impact on student and resident learners’ professional growth and success.
Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based CPE course, pharmacy preceptors should be able to:
• Describe the different types of racism including structural, institutional, individual, and internalized racism
• Analyze the historical context of structural racism
• Critique processes and practices that perpetuate structural racism
• Discuss strategies for mitigating structural racism
• Formulate a strategy for addressing structural racism based on a case scenario
