Severe Hypoglycemia is still a serious and significant problem in persons with type 1 and type 2 diabetes treated with sulfonylureas and/or insulin. Providers can help to identify, prevent and address this problem by assessing patients at risk. Avoidance is the first step and being prepared with the best rescue therapies is essential for rapid recovery. We’re taking a deep dive into what you need to know to address hypos in your patients with diabetes.
Learning Objectives:
After Completing this Activity, Participants Should be Able to:
1. Describe the clinical, emotional and public health significance of Severe Hypoglycemia in persons with T1D and T2D treated with sulfonylureas and or insulin.
2. Assess patients at risk for Severe Hypoglycemia and discuss recognition and treatment strategies that address individual treatment barriers.
3. Implement a care and education plan for providers to educate their patients about Severe Hypoglycemia using a glucagon option appropriate for them and to ensure each patient has an unexpired glucagon kit at home.
