Purpose of the Course:
Analysis of multi-level and longitudinal data is today central to medical research. Longitudinal data arise when the same research unit - usually a person or a patient - is examined several times. This is important in clinical and epidemiological studies, since with longitudinal trial plans we get information about the development of the treatment or the disease over time. Multilevel data occurs, for example, by examining several patients in one and the same hospital. The course will deal with measurements on a continuous scale, and linear models. Emphasis is placed on an intuitive and more informal understanding of the statistical models, and the main emphasis is on a practical approach with analysis of concrete examples. We will use the SPSS software package throughout the course. There will be a lot of use of examples and a thorough introduction to the relevant modules in SPSS. It is required that the participants have completed the introductory course in statistics, or acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way. It would be an advantage to have completed an advanced course in variance and regression analysis, but this is not required. The topics are partly based on some of the topics in the introductory course, but in this course a more in-depth and comprehensive presentation of them is given.

Theme Overview:
Topic 1: Introduction to variance and regression analysis . Review of simple and multiple regression and analysis of variance. Estimation, hypothesis testing and confidence interval estimation. Start: 2 September 2024. Deadline for submitting exercise work: 16 September 2024.
Theme 2: Analysis of repeated measurements via regression and analysis of variance . An introduction to GLM is given and simple methods for analyzing longitudinal data are reviewed. The methods cover the situation with longitudinal and multilevel data, with one and several explanatory variables. Start: 16 September 2024. Deadline for submitting exercise work: 30 September 2024.
Topic 3: Fixed and random effects, marginal models (GEE) . Introduction to fixed and random variables for the analysis of longitudinal and multilevel data. In this course period, the so-called marginal models will be studied, where the interest lies in the fixed effects and not in the random ones. Start: 30 September 2024. Deadline for submitting exercise work: 14 October 2024.
Topic 4: Linear models with fixed and random effects (LMM) . An overall presentation of models with both fixed and random variables is given. The models are general and cover situations with fixed effects that include categorical and continuous explanatory variables. A summary of known methods from variance analysis and regression analysis is given. Start: 14 October 2024. Deadline for submitting exercise work: 28 October 2024.
Theme 5: Model selection, model adaptation and design . Methods for model selection and model fitting for LMM are given. Start: 28 October 2024. Deadline for submitting exercise work: 11 November 2024.
