Release date: June 20, 2022,Expiration date: June 20, 2023,Description:,Hyperlipidemia is a significant risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease complications such as stroke or myocardial infarction. With more than 34 million US adults estimated to have hyperlipidemia, it is important for pharmacists to recognize key risk enhancers and engage patients in the treatment decision-making process. While lipid-lowering agents, particularly statins, have substantially reduced the burden of cardiovascular disease, in some cases, statin monotherapy may be insufficient or patients may experience statin intolerance and may require mono- or combination therapy with non-statin alternatives. This program will review efficacy and safety data associated with current and emerging non-statin agents and their use in clinical practice. By collaborating with multidisciplinary team members, providing patient education on risk factors and the role of newer, non-statin medications, and addressing potential barriers and challenges associated with statin therapy, pharmacists can have essential roles in promoting patient care and improving outcomes for patients with hyperlipidemia.,Educational Objectives:,At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:,• Review the updated guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology for the management and treatment of hyperlipidemia.,• Discuss the challenges associated with statin intolerance and efficacy and safety data associated with non-statin therapies including mechanisms of action, administration, dosing, and potential adverse effects.,• Recognize the role of the pharmacist as clinician and patient educator in the treatment and management of hyperlipidemia and in making clinical recommendations for non-statin therapies in appropriate patients.
