Abuse or neglect can happen to any patient. Victims of abuse and neglect suffer in isolation and fear, often without being identified and afraid to disclose information about their circumstances. The presentation of such patients is seldom clear, and detection usually involves piecing together various clues. As a healthcare practitioner and hospital staff member, you are in a position to help patients who are experiencing abuse and neglect.
Objectives:
Learning Objectives: Upon completion, participants should be able to:
• Describe signs and symptoms that may indicate a patient is suffering from abuse or neglect.
• List and describe steps a healthcare practitioner can take during assessment that can identify abuse and also protect the victim.
• Discuss how to support a potential or identified victim of abuse or neglect with compassionate messages, safety assessment, information on available services and appropriate reporting.
