Course Description & Information:
Inflammation is associated with many diseases today in both an acute and chronic state. Inflammation is the body’s response to a perceived threat. The “threat” can produce either a low-grade systemic response or a mount a full inflammatory response. All levels of inflammation have a negative effect on the body and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and other disease states. This seminar explores the connection between inflammation and pain and what can be done to reduce both. Key techniques to reduce inflammation and pain include nutrition therapy and exercise.
Course Objectives:
- Identify the role of inflammation in overall health and specific medical conditions (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease, CVD, Diabetes, Autoimmune diseases).
- Explain the relationship between dietary intake and systemic inflammation.
- List specific dietary components that can increase inflammation in the body.
- Summarize the evidence for diet patterns that are associated with reduced levels of systemic inflammation.
- Recognize the mechanisms leading to the inflammatory response and its role in disease development.
- Recognize the role of the gut microbiome in pain and inflammation.
- Identify the mechanism by which mitochondrial dysfunction promotes neurodegenerative diseases and pain.
- Define dietary strategies to treat and leaky gut and reduce joint pain.
- Identify dietary supplements that have been used to reduce pain and inflammation.
- Summarize exercise strategies that can reduce inflammation and aid in pain management.
Learning Outcome: At least 80% of class participants will score 70% or greater on course post-test.
