Course Description & Information:
This course is designed to give the participant advanced knowledge in the area of strength training for the aging adult. The benefits of strength training for the aging adult are numerous and the research has shown that strength training can positively benefit a multitude of areas effecting the older adult. This course will expand your knowledge on various applications of strength training as well as provide you with the principles and design components of an effective strength program for the aging adult population.

Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
• Discuss effects of aging and impact on strength and function.
• Discuss need for strength throughout a lifespan.
• Review research and the various applications to health and rehabilitation of an aging population.
• Define training principles as they apply to strength and rehabilitation.
• Discuss program design components for application to general fitness and rehabilitation for aging population.
• Discuss concerns and complications related to strength training.
• Discuss the role of protein, amino acids and creatine in strength training and disuse atrophy.
• Challenge participants to expand their understanding and application of strength training to their aging patient population.
