Currently, Dr. Winter is a professor of Pathology, Immunology & Laboratory Medicine, Pediatrics, and Molecular Genetics & Microbiology at the University of Florida. Between 1993 and 2006 he served as Medical Director for clinical chemistry at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. Dr. Winter directed the pathology residency training program for a total of 10 years through 2004. In addition to his duties as a clinical chemist, he directed the 2nd year medical student pathology course between 2004 and 2012.
Following the medical student curriculum revision of 2012, Dr. Winter founded the following courses: the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, kidney and the urinary tract, gastroenterology and hepatology, dermatology and the musculoskeletal system. and hematology. He taught the Foundations of Medicine course, Fundamentals of Microbiology and Immunology, Introduction to Cancer Biology and Clinical Oncology, the Pain and Addition Intensive, and Endocrinology and Reproduction. Between 2004 and 2020, Dr. Winter served as the course director for Dental Pathology at the College of Dentistry. As an NIH-funded independent investigator since 2000, he is currently the Principle Investigator for the Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet Islet Cell Autoantibody Core Laboratory, The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) Core Laboratory, and the Rare and Atypical Diabetes Network (RADIANT) Central Laboratory.
