Dr. Sandeep Basavarajaiah is currently working as a consultant cardiologist at the Heart of England NHS Trust. He is trained in coronary intervention and also fully competent in general cardiology skills such as transthoracic echocardiogram, transoesophageal echocardiogram, permanent pacemaker insertion, interpretation of Holter monitors, and exercise stress test.
He qualified in India from a prestigious medical college in South India in 2001. He obtained his postgraduate qualification (Membership of Royall College of Physicians) in 2005. Since then, he has trained in cardiology acquiring all the necessary skills to specialize in coronary intervention, general cardiology, and sports cardiology.
He has performed over 1500 percutaneous coronary interventions and has trained in one of the world-renowned units on a fellowship program in Milan for 1-year. He is directly trained under Professor Antonio Colombo (a world-renowned interventional cardiologist) learning all the tips and tricks of coronary intervention. As a consultant, he has performed over 400 cases during which he has also supervised specialist registrars.
He has researched an athlete’s heart and obtained a doctorate in medicine (MD) from King’s College London in 2011. His research answered one of the important questions in sports cardiology by assessing the ethnic differences in left ventricular remodeling between caucasian athletes and athletes of African/afro-Caribbean origin. He has assessed over 3000 athletes by performing ECG and echocardiogram during his research years and is fully competent in evaluating the cardiovascular system of athletes or any individual who undertakes regular physical training.
