Professor Richard Steeds is an Honorary Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Deputy Director of Clinical Research within the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Birmingham and Consultant in Cardiovascular Imaging at University Hospitals Birmingham. He is an international figure in cardiovascular imaging and is an NIHR Advanced Research Scholar. He was previously President of the British Society of Echocardiography, having been Chair of the Education Committee and on the Executive Committee of the British Society of Cardiology.
Professor Steeds is currently involved in the development of an automated electronic stethoscope for the early detection of significant valvular heart disease, launched at the beginning of 2020 with £1.2 million funding from the MRC. In addition, he is leading research into cardiac arrhythmias in patients with rare cardiomyopathy, using cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging, echocardiography, and biomarkers to develop a risk stratification tool to prevent the high rate of major adverse cardiovascular events in Fabry disease, funded by £1 million investigator-led funding from commercial sources.
Professor Steeds publishes regularly in leading journals, including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Heart and associated imaging journals, and lectures frequently at national and international meetings.
