Dr. Omar Islam earned his MD from the University of Toronto in 1995, after which he pursued a Radiology residency at Queen’s University. Following the completion of his residency, he undertook a fellowship in Neuroradiology at Yale University. Returning to Queen’s in 2001, Dr. Islam became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, and he also took on the role of Section Head for the Division of Neuroradiology and Head & Neck Imaging. Between 2003 and 2018, Dr. Islam served as the MRI Director and chair of the Quality Advisory Committee, as well as the President of the Board of Directors for Kingston MRI Inc. This non-profit community MRI clinic was licensed by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
Dr. Islam provided leadership in both the business and medical aspects of the clinic and played a crucial role in its growth from a start-up to the largest provider of outpatient MRI services between Toronto and Ottawa. In 2006, he co-founded Canadian Teleradiology Services Incorporated (CTS), which stands as one of Canada's premier Teleradiology companies.
Since 2008, Dr. Islam has been a member of the Examination Board in Diagnostic Radiology for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Additionally, he serves as a reviewer for both the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences and the Head & Neck Journal. Joining The Comprehensive Clinical Neurosurgery Review in 2017, he became a member of the Lead Faculty. Dr. Islam's expertise has also been sought in legal matters, as he has written over 40 expert opinion reports since 2003 for the courts. Since 2019, Dr. Islam has been serving as the Head of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Queen's University.
In addition to this role, he holds various other responsibilities, including being a Physician Facilitator at Touchstone Institute, a Delegate of District 7 Ontario Medical Association, a Member of the Ontario Health Diagnostic Imaging (DI) Advisory Committee, and the Regional Imaging Lead for the Southeast Region at Cancer Care Ontario. With a research interest in improving imaging access in Canada’s north, he co-founded the Portable MRI Journal, the world’s first medical journal devoted to ultra-low field MRI.
