Ms. May Mei-Sheng Riley, MSN, MPH, RN, ACNP, CCRN, CIC, holds two master's degrees, an MSN from the UCLA School of Nursing and an MPH from the UCLA School of Public Health. Her work in nursing has included medical/surgical, surgical/trauma, liver transplant, and critical care. Her experience in infection prevention/hospital epidemiology includes work with both adult and pediatric patients. Working as a nurse, Ms. Riley saw firsthand the devastating effects of hospital-acquired infections. This led her to enter the field of infection prevention in the hope of making a difference in the lives of patients suffering needlessly from preventable infections and calling for help. It is the patients' faces she sees behind the HAI data points.
In 2005, Ms. Riley successfully transitioned into the field of infection control and hospital epidemiology. She recognized epidemiology to be a rapidly developing scientific field so, in 2009, Ms. Riley returned to school to receive formal education in epidemiology. She is now better equipped than ever to identify surveillance gaps and develop/execute evidence-based strategies to prevent healthcare-associated infections. Ms. Riley demonstrates her thought leadership through publications. She has a passion for improving practice by generating evidence-based articles and education modules. Ms. Riley has an extensive list of publications, including books, abstracts, and articles. She is also an author for Mosby Elsevier and a Contributing CE author/editor in the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (ANCC).
