Dr. May Chan obtained her medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and was a Howard Hughes Research Scholar from 2005-2006. She completed residency training in Anatomic Pathology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, followed by a Dermatopathology fellowship at Harvard. She joined the University of Michigan in 2011 and is now a Professor of Pathology and Dermatology. She is the Interim Section Head for Dermatopathology, the Program Director for the Dermatopathology Fellowship, and the Medical Director of the Immunohistochemistry Laboratory. She also serves on the Test Development and Advisory Committee of the American Board of Pathology.

Dr. Chan is an editorial board member of Modern Pathology and the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology. She has a broad research interest in the areas of inflammatory skin diseases, melanocytic lesions, cutaneous adnexal neoplasms, and immunohistochemistry. She is the author/co-author of over 90 peer-reviewed publications and the book, Handbook of Direct Immunofluorescence: A Pattern-based Approach to Skin and Mucosal Biopsies.

Dr. Chan is board certified in Anatomic Pathology and Dermatopathology. In addition to her primary role as a dermatopathologist, Dr. Chan retains her interest in surgical pathology including interpretation of head and neck, soft tissue, pulmonary, and endocrine cases, as well as intraoperative frozen sections. Over the years she has been invited to speak at national and international meetings hosted by the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP), the American Society of Dermatopathology (ASDP), the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), the European Nail Society, and Dermpedia.
