Keith S. Naunheim graduated cum laude from undergraduate study at Johns Hopkins University in 1974 and was elected to the AOA Medical Honor Society prior to his graduation with honors from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1978. He remained at the University of Chicago throughout his internship, surgical residency, and cardiothoracic fellowship. After finishing training in 1985, he joined the faculty at St. Louis University where he remains to this day. He rose to become Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery in 1997 and was named to the Vallee and Melba Willman Chair of Surgery in 1999. Dr. Naunheim has been on the editorial board of multiple journals, edited 3 textbooks, and has authored or co-authored over approximately 300 articles, book chapters, and abstracts. In 1998 he was named to the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and has served as a member of the governing councils of several thoracic surgical organizations. Dr. Naunheim has been active in many specialty associations, having served as president of both his local (St Louis Thoracic Surgical Society) and regional associations (Southern Thoracic Surgery Society). In 2018 he was elected as president of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the largest of the world’s cardiothoracic surgical organizations. Dr. Naunheim has been the invited speaker for many named lectures, both nationally and internationally. In 2016 he was recognized by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and inducted as an Honorary Fellow ad Hominem. His clinical interests include lung volume reduction, minimally invasive thoracic surgery, esophageal surgery, health policy, and quality improvement.
