Dr. Eric Sauerbrei is currently the Medical Director of Breast Imaging Kingston (BIK), which is a stand-alone KHSC comprehensive breast imaging clinic that provides virtually all breast imaging and imaging–guided breast procedures for Kingston and the surrounding area. His clinical passion is breast imaging and imaging-guided breast procedures and ultrasound evaluation of embryonic and fetal development.
He completed a Radiology Residency at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario, followed by Fellowship training at Vancouver General Hospital, University of British Columbia, in Vancouver British Columbia. He joined Queen’s University and affiliated hospitals in 1980 as Assistant Professor of Radiology and became Professor of Radiology in 1989. Locally, he is the past Director of Ultrasound in Radiology for many years, past Director of the Residents’ Research Program, and past Co-Director of the Fetal Assessment Unit at KHSC.
Nationally and internationally, he has served as a Radiology oral examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (1987-1992), associate editor of the Journal Ultrasound in Medicine (1983-1985), Physician Advisor and Board Member of the Canadian Association of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (1990-1993), grant reviewer for the Medical Research Council of Canada (1990-1995), journal reviewer for the American Journal of Radiology (1983-1991), book reviewer for the journal RADIOLOGY (1984-1989), journal reviewer for the Journal of the Canadian Association of Radiologists (1992-2000), member of the Constitution Committee of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU) (1990-1992), member of the Education Committee of the SRU (2011-2013), member of the Ultrasound Scientific Committee of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) (1995-2000), and Chair of the RSNA Annual Ultrasound Refresher Course Committee (2003-2006).
He is a fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), a fellow of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU), and a member of the Canadian Association of Radiologists and the Radiological Society of North America.
He has published 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 16 book chapters, and 3 ultrasound books (as first author). He has presented 67 papers/abstracts at scientific meetings, 16 scientific posters, 82 invited lectures, 27 refresher courses, and 14 visiting professorships/lectureships. He is a co-recipient of 3 patents and 7 grants. He has also served as an expert Radiology reviewer for 21 international multi-center clinical trials, organized by the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) (1993-2007) and 7 more international trials sponsored by other agencies.
Dr. Sauerbrei is committed to optimizing breast imaging and related procedures at BIK with his colleagues in Women’s Imaging, in collaboration with Surgery, Oncology, and Pathology; and committed to excellence in fetal/pregnancy ultrasound at KHSC with his colleagues in Women’s Imaging, in collaboration with Perinatology and Obstetrics/Gynecology.
