Dr. Anne Mills is a tenured Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Virginia. She completed AP/CP training at Stanford University in 2012 and subsequently received fellowship training in Gynecologic & Breast Pathology and Cytopathology at the University of Virginia. In addition to signing out surgical pathology and cytopathology, she serves as both the AP/CP Residency program director and Gynecologic and Breast Pathology Fellowship Director. She also maintains a steady consultative service for challenging gynecologic pathology cases.
Dr. Mills pursues translational research centering on the use of histology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and molecular studies to inform a cancer diagnosis, prognostication, and treatment. Her research has an emphasis on human papillomavirus-related cancers, heritable and mismatch repair-deficient malignancies, and immunotherapy biomarkers, and she has published over 90 original articles and chapters on these topics. She serves on the Editorial boards for Modern Pathology, The American Journal of Surgical Pathology, and The International Journal of Gynecological Pathology.
She has been an active member of the USCAP since her residency training and has served the organization through her work as a USCAP Ambassador and through her work on the Resident Advisory Subcommittee, the Social Media Committee, and the Annual Meeting Abstract Review Board. She is passionate about improving patient care at both the local and national levels and participates in advocacy efforts with groups such as the College of American Pathologists and the Virginia Society for Pathology. She is the Co-Chair for the CAP’s Lower Anogenital Squamous Terminology Update project and has served on expert panels for both the CAP and the American Society for Clinical Oncology's MMR/MSI Testing for Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy Guidelines as well as the Society for Immunotherapy for Cancer’s Gynecologic Cancer Clinical Practice Guidelines Statement.
